CTC

The Climate Technology Center (CTC) in Bonn is the executing body of the project by advising on and coordinating climate projects. It combines a number of criteria which qualify the CTC as perfect place to implement H2 projects.

You can also visit „ICEPS CTC“ on Facebook to learn more about CTC’s history, activities and involvement in the clima protection and hydrogen sector.

Characteristics of the location, especially as for the Bonn Climate Project

1.  Direct connection to the traffic hub of motorway A 61 and A 565 in 3 minutes distance, respectively

2. Centre being integrated in the industrial zone Meckenheim Railway Station with entire public metropolitan passenger transport and railway connection in 300m distance

3. Eight different bus lines serve the whole region up to the city of Bonn

4. Public metropolitan passenger transport at the corner of the bus station

5. Park and Ride with parking lots for 120 vehicles in 300m distance

6. Currently, 150 own parking lots on the CTC premises

7. Own rail connection by usable siding track, at the property boundary. Possible presentation of a H² train

8. Railway connection to Bonn Main Station in 16 minutes travel time by rail, or car to Bonn centre, or World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB), respectively

9. Wind farm Meckenheim Rheinbach in 200 – 300m distance, for wind power plant and Power-to-Gas plant, set-up on CTC premises

10. Network junction of electricity and gas grids. Low and high pressure gas grids and low, medium, and high voltage electricity grids for the purpose of feeding-in of surplus current or „green“ H² gas (pre-requisite for Power-to-Gas)

11. CTC specifications: 8’000m² effective area, indoor and outdoor, built for all usage variations, like: exhibition, training workshop, information events, conferences, for the entire transportation sector (with all H²/battery electric vehicles including buses and trucks of all sizes; likewise for tractors and special purpose vehicles, agriculture, military, and municipal deployment

The main project of the CTC consists in the thermochemical gasification of any kind of biomass waste of all kinds. From this, the following further application possibilities can be optionally presented – either in an important combination with each other or separately. As noted, these are only options. For a national energy policy and international climate policy, however, it makes sense and advisable to deal holistically with the following conditions and technical possibilities.

1. Location for an H2 plant – thermochemical production of H2 from biomass waste.

2. Site for biogas production via conventional fermenters; in connection with the aforementioned thermochemical gasification plant.

3. Site for gasification of sewage sludge; in combination with the aforementioned systems.

4. Site for gasification of waste; from nearby old landfills

5. Location for H2 plant „Power to Gas“; Supply via wind turbines and PV panels as well as with existing excess current from the medium voltage line.

6. Location for biogas filling stations of all gases such as H2, CNG / LNG; in the pressure stages 200, 350 and 700 bar.

7. Location for charging stations for battery electric vehicles of all kinds and generation of electricity via decentralized small mobile fuel cells that do not burden the power grid.

8. Injection into the various gas pipes of the e-regio Euskirchen.

9. Feed into the natural gas transport grid via the high-pressure line of Open Grid Europe / VNG.

10. Possibly feed-in point at RWE / Amprion power grid – substation Meckenheim HVDC (1000 meters distance).

11. Entry point or pick-up point at RWE / Westnetz from the medium-voltage grid (on the site).

12. Construction of a separate H2 pipeline with a length of 1,000 to 3,000 meters; Transporting H2 into the directly adjacent newly planned „Sonnenseite residential area“, into the existing Meckenheim industrial area, into the newly planned Meckenheim industrial park („Bio Innovations Park“) for the complete supply of electricity, heat and H2 as fuel, and to use H2 for further uses Industry, housing, transport.

13. Specified wind farm Meckenheim / Rheinbach at a distance of 300 meters to the CTC, on the same street. Optional construction of several small wind turbines up to a maximum total height of 50 meters for the power-to-gas systems, for later use, for example. in remote areas in Africa.

14. Photovoltaic site Meckenheim on the adjacent fields; for the development of PV systems.

15. Energy cache or upstream storage for the production of H2.
Construction of various different gas containers (tube storage, spherical containers, tanks of all kinds).
Storage of biomass in the form of dry or silaged biomass (function of an energy storage), for the later thermochemical gasification which takes place in seconds at 850 degrees temperature.

16. Meckenheim sewage treatment plant – distance 1000 meters;  H2 production from sewage sludge.
Use for fermentation and gasification (in coupling) with the involvement of the city of Bonn and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with possibly other cities to solve the problem of disposal contaminated sewage sludge (see introductory description.
